Bloch #054
Provenance
Between 1782 and 1795 Marcus Elieser Bloch published his Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische (General History of Fishes), a 12-volume, beautifully illustrated comprehensive work on fishes. It is generally considered the most notable of all books on ichthyology.
Bloch’s first work focused on German fish and was entirely original, based on his own observations, reliable and thorough. His study of foreign fishes, however, was based on the works of others. Thus it was subject to many of the misconceptions that filtered through the great body of travel literature during the 18th century - presenting a range of illustrations with exacting accuracy on one hand or enticing imagination on the other. Each of the hand-colored illustrations are identified in several languages.
We will continuously publish a large number of Bloch’s beautiful fishes.
